Who she is

Nia Carter is kind, helpful, warm, reliable and sensitive. If you’ve got a problem, she’s already helping. If there’s a birthday to organise, everyone quietly assumes Nia will do it.

What she carries

She’s conflict-avoidant and can’t say no. The word gets as far as her throat and comes out as “Yeah, course, no worries.” She ends up exhausted, then resentful, then guilty about the resentment, then helpful again to make up for it.

What she’s learning

That boundaries are not cruelty. They’re how kindness stays alive long enough to mean something. In Typing…, Nia rewrites a message without the three sorries, and sends it. The replies aren’t what she feared. One friend privately thanks her for showing that saying no is allowed.

What she can teach

That the people who love you can cope with a “not this time.” That going first gives others permission. That being needed and being cared for aren’t the same thing.
